The single best thing you can do is make it feel exciting rather than intimidating. Talk it up in the days before. Let them know they are old enough and brave enough to do something really cool. When kids walk in curious instead of anxious, the whole visit goes better for everyone. Since our intake forms are digital, there is nothing to print or fill out in the waiting room. Just bring any insurance cards and a summary of your child's medical history, and our team will take care of everything else.

We recommend scheduling that first visit around your child's first birthday, or when their first tooth appears, whichever happens first. This is the same guidance offered by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Starting early gives us a chance to check that development is on track, answer your home care questions, and help your child begin building a positive relationship with the dentist before they are old enough to feel nervous about it. If your child is older and has never been seen, do not stress. The best appointment is always the next one.

A dental home is simply the practice where your child receives their ongoing dental care throughout childhood. While a general dentist may treat patients of all ages, a pediatric dentist works exclusively with children and adolescents. Sedation is an option worth discussing when a child is very anxious, has a significant amount of treatment needed, cannot cooperate safely with treatment while awake, or has a strong gag reflex or fear of needles that makes routine care difficult. Our doctors will always walk you through every available option before recommending sedation, and it is never the default. When it is the right choice, though, it can make an otherwise stressful experience completely manageable for your child. Safety is our top priority throughout the entire process.

There are a few common reasons. If adult teeth are coming in alongside baby teeth, you may notice a color difference since baby teeth tend to be brighter white and adult teeth naturally have a more ivory tone. A buildup of plaque can also cause discoloration over time, which is one reason regular cleanings matter. And if a tooth looks chalky white or brownish, that can sometimes signal early decay. No matter what you are noticing, we are always happy to take a look and give you a clear answer.

Regular checkups every six months give us the opportunity to watch how your child's teeth and jaw are developing. Some children benefit from an early orthodontic evaluation around age six or seven, while others do not need a referral until their early teens. We will keep a close eye on things and let you know when and if a visit to the orthodontist makes sense for your child.
